Enable/Disable the Windows Firewall
Turning Windows Firewall Off
To manually disable the Windows Firewall open Windows Firewall in Control Panel and select the Off option on the General tab
Turning Windows Firewall On
To enable the Windows Firewall simply select the On option on the General tab:
NOTE: Don't turn on the Windows Firewall unless you have selected the exception for RDP, otherwise it may knock you off the system you are remotely connected to.
Configuring the Windows Firewall
The Exceptions Tab
This exceptions tab will enable various services and ports for the entire system. Use great care in what you choose to allow here. The exceptions tab should look similar to the image below:
The buttons across the bottom of the window allow you to add, edit, or delete various exceptions. An exception will allow a service through the firewall to the application listening on a particular port. To Add a program to the exceptions list, simply choose "Add Program" and select it from the list or browse for the program/service. You can edit the default exceptions to allow or create new ones to allow all traffic through, only the local subnet, or various specified ips and subnets. Lets take a look at how to do this, you would "edit" the port or service, and you may also select change scope to refine who is allowed to access the port:
